Horrible Bosses: How to Avoid Hiring, Creating, and Nurturing Them

We’ve all heard the statistic that 75% of employees have left a job because of their manager. Horrible bosses abound, but where did they come from? In this session, we’ll explore how this phenomenon happens, ways to avoid repeating the mistakes that create a thriving environment for horrible bosses, and introduce strategies to help you nurture good bosses.

This presentation will take you on the journey, reveal the tools and processes used to evaluate and address challenges and chart a new course (complete with ongoing course corrections).  You will leave this session with practical techniques you can use in your organization tomorrow.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Define factors that lead to horrible bosses (bad management, ineffective leadership)
  • Identify environments and cultures that nurture horrible boss behavior
  • Learn strategies to help managers become good bosses

Liz Upchurch, CPCC, ACC, is a personal development coach and facilitator. In 2024, she launched Undeniable Potential, a coaching and development organization dedicated to helping new managers who feel overwhelmed find their footing so they can be confident leaders. In addition to coaching, Liz brings over 20 years of experience in facilitating training, leading and managing teams, and designing engaging programs. She has earned credentials as a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach (CPCC) from CTI (Coach Training Institute) and as an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) from the International Coaching Federation. When she’s not coaching and facilitating, Liz enjoys traveling to new places, listening to podcasts and audio books, and getting creative with one of her many crafting hobbies.
